Our response to Covid-19
These are unprecedented times. Until the threat of Covid-19 is eased and controlled, each of us is being forced to make fundamental changes in the way we live. We want you to know how we are responding at the Julia Greeley Home.
Last week, Leslie Collins-Pottebaum, who heads the management team for JGH, instituted a strict and comprehensive policy to keep our residents safe. We are blessed that Leslie has more than 30 years’ experience in social services management and is committed to following a policy of best practices when it comes to running the Julia Greeley Home. Leslie is also founder and director of Shannon’s Hope, a residence for pregnant women. Our JGH residents occupy one wing of the 8,000 foot facility with Shannon’s Hope.
Leslie’s rules are strict and sensible. For example, everyone who enters the home must pass through a room where they use a safe bleach solution to wash their hands and wipe down their shoes and objects, like purses and bags. They will have their temperature taken. Donors are asked to call ahead of time so we can be ready for them, and when they arrive, we are asking them to remain outside and leave their donations at the front door.
When more than one person shares a home, it’s obviously a challenge to maintain safe distances. However, everyone in the house understands the serious nature of this crisis, and we’re proud of how willing and eager they are to do their part. That means they are maintaining at least six feet of distance from fellow residents. Each woman is making her own meals independently in the kitchen. Until this crisis passes, they will not be sharing a dinner table together. Evening program classes are suspended for the time being, but if circumstances permit they may be conducted using remote means.
When it comes to homelessness, Covid-19 has created a “perfect storm” of urgency in Colorado. Even before this crisis hit, there hasn’t been enough shelter space for everyone who needs it, especially for women who are alone and unprotected. That’s why the Julia Greeley Home was founded, and that’s why, during this crisis, we will continue to be here for all our women in need.
Thanks to all of you who make the Julia Greeley Home possible through your gifts and donations. We can be here for women in need, because you’re here for us.
You’re in my prayers,
Father Regis Scanlon OFM Cap
